I've Got A Bad Feeling About This! Cat Cartoon

The idea for this one came from my sister. Since we've been involved in trapping feral cats for spay/neuter and she had just seen my orange "Say What?" cartoon cat, she suggested a kitten in a carrier...

Her first idea was the kitten saying, "You're taking me where?" which is kind of a play on the line of the Say What cat - but I thought taking a little different tack might be more appropriate.

I drew the kitten/cat first, starting with the eyes to get that special surprised/frightened look, and then spiraling outward from there to do the features, followed by the paws.

I used a straight edge for the outer lines of the carrier but I didn't measure or anything, I wanted to keep it free and loose so it was all quick eyeball kind of thing.

Lettering and color fill are digital. Being me, I agonized over whether to use the grammatically correct "I have a bad feeling about this" or the more colloquial "I got a bad feeling about this." I really had trouble deciding! ...So I did it both ways, one on a Zazzle shirt and the other on a Cafepress set of t-shirts and things.

Way to be decisive there, Dr. Obvious.

I've been trying to get some more cartooning done by just basically starting off with a random doodle and then figuring what it goes to as I draw along. In this case, I started off drawing a single horizontal line, which became the demarcation of the upper eyelids.

It looked a little severe, like an angry person or kitty, so I drew the eyes as narrower than average slits. The more I drew, the angrier it got! By the time I was done, I knew what the cartoon cat was saying....

Handlettered for more dramatic effect, I guess - or just because I like hand lettering, it's Angry Tabby...

Based on the earlier line drawing of an angry cat (done in marker on 9x12 paper), this one is fleshed-out a little with color and tabby stripes. It's not very happy about something - this drawing looks even angrier than the previous version. Available in several style of t-shirt.

The drawing is straight marker on paper, no preliminary pencil sketches. I think of these cartoons as already there, hidden in the paper, and I just help the marker bring them out.

Elvis The Cat - Logo for Cat Paws

This mascot character design was created by me, exclusively for Cats Paws
sanctuary in Blackpool England. They wanted an entertainer-type cat to advertise musical/dancing fundraisers. As I was creating the character, I got another note saying "maybe a cat singing with a microphone - like Elvis ..." - and this is what I came up with!

I hope Elvis Cat helps them bring in lots of donations. Animal shelters are always in need of help.

A Miss Kitty Logo Cartoon

Created for an animal rescue group, Kitty Cat Connection, this logo is an original character created to their specifications. The group's intent is to use Kitty to advertise cat adoption events etc and even create a costume character from this design.

You all know how I feel about cat rescue, I'm sure! :) Sorry for the big copyright splash on the image but I really want it to be just for them...

Adopt A Cat Have A Heart Cartoon Graphic Design

This is my second graphic design cartoon for Adopt A Cat month. And as I said, with all the cute, sweet, loving kitties being put to death in shelters every single day, EVERY month should be adopt a cat month.

I'm really super serious about this. As many of you know, I'm actively involved in cat rescue and I put my own resources on the line every day. But I can't do it all by myself, or even accomplish all that much. You need to do your part, too, if you possibly can.

Adopt a cat if you aren't allergic and are allowed to have pets. If you aren't allowed to have pets, maybe it's time to move! If you can't do that, then you can at least get the t-shirt to encourage others to adopt - and to help support cat rescue. It seems like a small thing but every little bit helps. Get the tshirt. (there is also a dark tee shirt available).

Have A Heart - Cat Adoption Month

The little kitty needs you! It's saying, "Have a heart, adopt me!" ...This month is cat adoption month but endangered little kitties know that every month should be cat adoption month.

Here's the deal, if you like cats, are not deathly allergic to them and you live in a place where you are allowed to have pets, you should do your part.

The sad truth is that thousands of sweet, loving kitties are murdered in shelters every day. They call it "euthanasia," which means "good death" ...but there is nothing good about killing these poor innocent pets. You can save at least one, though, so please do so!

New Widget Too Big To Fail Cartoon Cat

The original Widget design that I called Too Big To Fail has been kind of popular...which is great! I've been wanting to update it, however, to make the "toon" more dynamic and three dimensional. At long last, here it is....
This is a wacky Widget, for sure, but he was also fun to draw. I had a little bit of frustration deciding exactly what the shape of the kitty's head should be a this odd angle... this resulted in my redrawing the cartoon about 4 or 5 times. I'm still not completely satisfied but this Widget will have to do until I come up with a new one.

On the bonus side, by the time I finished coloring this Widget I had an idea for yet another cat; one that is much for sketchy and - what shall we call it? - Grungy? Lo-Fi? :) You'll see...

The Return of Skeptical Cat

Skeptical cat should be a whole panel toon. I know he has a lot to say. For now, I'm keeping him succinct enough for commercial utility, but sooner or later Skeptical Cat will have to elaborate on his views.

Skeptical Cat continues to look like a first cousin of Widget The Cat... which is fine, really. There is more than enough variation with Hammie and Lucy to keep things going. I had a recent commercial project where I ended up creating a wide variety of snarky cats that don't fit in well with the Funny Cat friends ..so you won't be seeing them.

And as always, you can see more of Skeptical Cat and his friends on various things you can wear 'n stuff. Um... yeah... ToonZ.Me.

In my first iteration, I just drew the cat. He certainly looks as annoyed as the real feral cat does, but maybe he's just a little too real for cartoon purposes. Which is why I redid Skeptical Cat to the more cartoony version you see at the top of the page.

This is my original idea for the cartoon. It is based on the whole "it's too big to fail" thing the government has been doing for giant corporations and billionaires. BUT.... I'm open to other ideas.

When you are talking people, if you create a cartoon of a person where you can actually tell who the person is, you call it a caricature. But cats aren't people no matter how much I think they are, so I think that that a caricature of a cat is still a cartoon even though you can tell one cat from another.

There aren't that many animal caricaturists around, and nobody - as far as I know - does only cats. Well, because I'm kind of a retard, I guess I've decided to do cat cartoon/caricatures.

Originally, I started doing these at my own site, Roadside Artist art, but I can see that I'm not going to be able to afford to keep doing that, so I'm moving things here.

Unless you are an art superstar - and there are only about half a dozen of those at any given time - and NOT a retard like me, there really isn't any money in art. But there needs to be 'cuz you wouldn't want someone like ME making your burger an McDonald's now, would you???
